Coverage will begin with the War in the Pacific. Focus will then shift to the aftermath of the Second World War in Europe, Asia and Africa. We will see there were numerous consequences of World War II that were detrimental to many countries lasting until the recent past. We will also look at the Nuremberg trials, the Marshall plan and the buildup of the Iron Curtain.

A course for ordinary people who wish to write their life stories as a gift to their children and grandchildren. Our aim is not to correct spelling and grammar. We merely want writers to tell and write their stories if they so wish. Join us for a ride and share in a wonderful journey of writing. The group is there to encourage and facilitate writing in a friendly atmosphere.

More than 90% of our planet’s fresh water is located on the continent of Antarctica in the form of ice. Yet, Antarctica is an icy desert, the driest of the seven continents. Several thousand people work on this harsh and inhospitable continent during the Austral summers in support of scientific research. As a Canadian, I was fortunate enough to spend two Austral summers in Antarctica while working for the United States Antarctic Program from 1999 to 2001. Come along with me as I share some of my photos, artifacts, and experiences of living and working in Antarctica.

This session focuses on the core beliefs, practices and values of Islam. We will discuss the five pillars of Islam which form the room of most of the mandatory practices, the six pillars of faith (belief, Arabic Iman) and the inner values which breathe life into these beliefs and practices (Ihsan). We will further examine the societal values which arise by adopting these three elements. Lastly we can take a look at how these values transcended particular regions and cultures, morphing into a “World Islam” based on the Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad. While this session will build upon the previous one, the material will not be the same.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge represents for many Canadians an important marker of Canadian nationhood and identity. It was the first engagement in the Great War in which the entire Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together. Certainly it was a stunning victory, but did it really represent Canada’s birth as a nation? The tragic yet successful battle is commemorated by the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. Indeed, the magnificent soaring limestone memorial in itself has fueled the Vimy legend and perhaps in its symbolism exaggerated Vimy as the place where Canada came of age on the battlefield. Were there not many other significant steps on our road to nationhood?

This is the story, based on his diary, of Archie Angus Robertson LAC (Leading Aircraft Mechanic) 421 Spitfire Squadron. The story follows his joining the RCAF in 1941; training at the Vickers aircraft plants in Montreal and Toronto. Sent overseas in Dec, 43; the diary then follows his experiences from Normandy, through Belgium, Holland and Germany until the wars end May 8, 1945. It is supported by the use of a series of his own photos.

As the lyrics in the song Memory Lane put it, “Let’s take a ride down memory lane and try to see where we’ve all been. It’s been so long and everything’s changed.” Presenter Claude McIntosh writes a weekly Seaway News column, which takes a look at the “good old days.”

The year of the union of the parliaments of Britain and Scotland in 1707 was rife with controversy, but it marked the beginning of the modern empire of Great Britain. Today, this creation is under assault from all sides and we, as Canadians, are in every sense, children of this creation. Our workshop will lay the foundation of this great story.

A talk on climate change as seen through the prism of revolutions – from agricultural to industrial and on to the year 2022. There is a need for everyone, regardless of their standing in society, to understand that, even though we are contributing to climate change, we did not cause the problem in the first place. We need to look at how the world came to this frightening point in history. This talk will provide a balanced look at how climate change occurred and its impact on the environment.

This session will provide an update on the SD&G Historical Society/Cornwall Community Museum’s new vision, plus improvements and upcoming community projects for 2022 and 2023. Attention will then focus on the history of the Indian Act and the Residential School System from the 1830’s to the present and it’s impact on Indigenous Peoples and Canadians today.

Central America is an overlooked part of the Western Hemisphere, with six small countries separating Mexico from Colombia in South America. It might appear that the six countries would have much in common, including for the most part a common language, Spanish. But in this overview the objective is to show the differences within this diverse region. We’ll look at the region’s history, its development, its fairly recent descent into numerous internal conflicts, and the contemporary issues that drive the governments in each country. While only an overview, it should set the stage for more specialized examinations of each of these interesting countries.

We will touch on different types of abuse, the cycle of abuse, narcissistic personalities, red flags, etc. We will also discuss our Social Enterprise, Serendipity Boutique, a thrift store we run in support of the shelter and the volunteer opportunities therein.

For many seniors and their families who are new to the world of senior retirement living, wading through the vast array of residence options and care levels can be overwhelming. We will discuss the different levels of care, starting with fully independent options such as apartments up to higher levels of care that can include an array of care services. We will also discuss Short Stay options where you stay for a shorter period of time, typically to rest and recover from a surgery, or any other situation where you may benefit from some extra support in the short term.

Maggie Wheeler, the Seaway Valley’s Queen of Crime, shares her experiences and process for bringing history to life on the page. Learn the basics of working with setting, characters and plot within the added challenge of an historical framework. Wheeler will top off with a brief sample from her seventh and final Farran Mackenzie mystery set for launch this fall—The Last Wave By.

Haunting highland beauty and an interesting blend of Mi’kmaw, Scottish and Acadian cultures and warm hospitality. We will explore its’ geography, resources, economy, languages and government: also the lives of the early pioneers as they eked out a living from the land and the sea in their new rugged homeland. This is the story of an island. Although connected to Nova Scotia by a causeway since 1955, it is still far enough away from “the mainland” for people to have developed their own ways!

The Sacred Office of the Holy Inquisition has come down to us through a lot of unflattering and in many cases inaccurate stereotypes. Although these have a ring of authenticity, none is particularly accurate. It is important to judge movements and events within their historical context. The Crusades are crucial to understanding the origins of the Inquisition which partly grew out of them. Having failed miserably in the Holy Land, the Crusades were brought home to stamp out alleged heresies within Christendom, whether these stemmed from pious sects, religious orders, Jewish and Muslims converts, Protestants, scientists, or witches.

The brain has two main sides. Left science and right art. We will study science as a means to an end and art as an end in itself. Each person’s life is an art form. Learning to play a musical instrument is pure science. The art is how the composer uses this science. By the permutation of genes, each person is unique so each life is an art form. Group discussion will be encouraged. Situations will be used as examples.

You will see the construction of the hives and methods of extracting honey. You will have a new appreciation of these beautiful creatures. Don’t worry, I will not bring any of my bees with me, however after learning about them you might become a new bee keeper.
