DESCRIPTION:The influenza pandemic of 1918\, the deadliest in human history\, infected at least 500 million people — about one-third of the world’s population at the time — and killed an estimated 50 million of its victims\, including some 675\,000 Americans and 50\,000 Canadians. While it claimed three times as many lives as were lost in the First World War\, it has been overshadowed by that struggle and known as “the forgotten pandemic”. Certainly coverage of the pandemic was suppressed for fear it would demoralize the Great War effort. What can we learn about its causes\, its spread\, and the worldwide efforts to control this deadly virus that might aid in the present struggle with the Covid-19 pandemic?

As a Canadian\, I was fortunate enough to spend two Austral summers in Antarctica while working for the United States Antarctic Program from 1999 to 2001. We will discuss the five pillars of Islam which form the room of most of the mandatory practices\, the six pillars of faith (belief\, Arabic Iman) and the inner values which breathe life into these beliefs and practices (Ihsan). We will further examine the societal values which arise by adopting these three elements. Lastly we can take a look at how these values transcended particular regions and cultures\, morphing into a “World Islam” based on the Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad. DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Vimy Ridge represents for many Canadians an important marker of Canadian nationhood and identity. It was the first engagement in the Great War in which the entire Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together. Certainly it was a stunning victory\, but did it really represent Canada’s birth as a nation? The tragic yet successful battle is commemorated by the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
