DESCRIPTION:During the years 1869 to 1939\, in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution\, more than 100\,000 youngsters\, aged from 4 years to 14 years\, were sent from Britain to Canada to work as farm labourers or domestics. These youngsters were known as the British Home Children. Their stories will be revealed by John and Jan Milnes\, co-authors of two books that follow 3 boys and 3 girls\, all British Home Children\, as they leave their homeland to settle in Canada.

Our workshop will display and analyze pivotal pieces by Marcel Duchamps\, Kazimir Malevich\, El Lissitzky and Picasso. We will begin by examining their early work within the framework of the Austrian School of subjective value theory and conclude with the appropriation art of Richard Prince and Andy Warhol\, possibly touching on the recent NFT art of Damien Hirst’s “Currency\,” should time permit. DESCRIPTION:The influenza pandemic of 1918\, the deadliest in human history\, infected at least 500 million people — about one-third of the world’s population at the time — and killed an estimated 50 million of its victims\, including some 675\,000 Americans and 50\,000 Canadians. While it claimed three times as many lives as were lost in the First World War\, it has been overshadowed by that struggle and known as “the forgotten pandemic”. Certainly coverage of the pandemic was suppressed for fear it would demoralize the Great War effort. What can we learn about its causes\, its spread\, and the worldwide efforts to control this deadly virus that might aid in the present struggle with the Covid-19 pandemic?

DESCRIPTION:While most people are familiar with the two great wars of the past century\, many additional conflicts took place during this time. Focus will be upon these lesser-known combats with emphasis on how and why they each started and the influence they had upon future wars. Some of the topics covered will include; the confrontation in Ethiopia that pushed Mussolini into Hitler’s arms\, the hostilities in Spain and their impact on the Second World War.
