We will look at what is known about these types of memories as well as talking about ways to improve your memory. And we’ll also look at forgetting and why it does or does not happen, as in PTSD.

Forget most of what you know about the Hundred Years War: Crécy, Poitiers, Agincourt — the Black Prince, Henry V, Joan of Arc — It wasn’t a hundred years; it wasn’t a single war; and it was only nominally over the disputed succession to the French throne. In essence, it involved more English jealousy of France’s riches and English greed for plunder on all levels. With technological innovations, the image of medieval chivalry faded and the reality of total war supplanted it, leaving France despoiled and England bankrupt. Eventually national identities and centralized governments grew stronger in both countries as they gradually rose to global powers.

THE PALATINE LOYALIST PIONEERS OF STORMONT AND DUNDAS COUNTIES
The World We Have Lost: or, How the “Palatine” German Loyalists from the valleys of the Rhine and the Neckar in southern Germany came to the valleys of the Hudson and Schoharie and Mohawk on the frontier of colonial New York. And following the American Revolution they, perhaps surprisingly, became the largest single group of original Loyalist settlers in the St. Lawrence valley, especially in the later counties of Dundas and Stormont! Why did they emigrate to the Thirteen Colonies? Why did so many remain loyal during the Revolution and migrate to Upper Canada? And what became of them?

We’ll look at our efforts to kindle community-led development, and the surprising method we’ve found that is giving them the tools to create their own future. Now, the task is to mentor in a way that supports their ideas, the mistakes they’ll inevitably make, and their successes on the road to self-sufficiency.

One of the greatest dramas in the history of Canada and indeed North America took place at the fortified town of Louisbourg between 1749 and 1758. This session tells the tale of two empires, the French and the English, who clashed headlong over the drive to dominate North America. Cape Breton Island was strategically situated near the entrance to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the gateway to Canada and the northern part of what is now the USA. The town and the fortress of Louisbourg had a dramatic and short-lived military and social history. It’s a compelling story.

This conversation will include the background religious/political situation that led to this battle. It will also ask the participants to consider if this military offensive was well planned and resourced or was it destined to fail.
